Your face keeps a record. The skin under your eyes writes it first.

In 2013, sleep researchers in Stockholm photographed ten people twice: once after a normal night's sleep, and once after 31 hours awake. Then they asked 40 strangers to rate the photos.
Without knowing which was which, the raters saw the sleepless faces as having "darker circles under the eyes," more swollen eyes and more hanging eyelids.
One lost night was enough. But sleep is only one of four reasons the area under your eyes darkens, and each one needs a different fix.
The short answer: dark circles have four causes: pigment, blood vessels, hollows and puffiness. The fix depends on which one you have, and most people have two.

Why It Shows Here First
The skin of the lower eyelid is one of the thinnest on the body. A clinical review in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery describes it as "somewhat transparent," offering "little camouflage" for the blood vessels beneath it.
A short night, a salty dinner, a long allergy season, years of sun. This patch of skin shows all of it before the rest of your face does.

What Causes Dark Circles Under Your Eyes?

| Cause | How it looks | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Pigment | Brown or gray, the same in any light | Sunscreen, vitamin C |
| Blood vessels | Blue or purple, darker when tired | Sleep, cold, hydration |
| Hollows | A shadow that moves with the light | A dermatologist |
| Puffiness | Swollen, worst in the morning | Cold, caffeine, less salt |
Most people have two at once. That is why a single remedy rarely does the whole job.
The Two Minute Mirror Test

Stand facing a window in daylight. Gently lift the skin under your eye with a fingertip. If the color stays the same, it is pigment. If it fades or turns bluer, it is blood vessels.
Now tip your chin up toward the light. If the darkness shrinks, it is a hollow casting a shadow, not a color in the skin. And if it is worst in the morning and gone by lunch, add puffiness to the list.
How to Get Rid of Dark Circles: What Works
Caffeine and cold, for puffiness. A randomized, placebo controlled study found a caffeine based gel reduced lower eyelid swelling and pigmentation. A cold, wet cloth works on the same principle, helping "shrink the blood vessels."
Vitamin C, for pigment and thin skin. In a clinical study, topical vitamin C lightened the dark color of the lower eyelids and thickened the eyelid dermis, which hides the vessels beneath it. One ingredient, two of the four causes.
Sunscreen, every morning. Pigment darkens with every unprotected day. Broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, all the way to the lower lash line.
Sleep, a second pillow, and your allergies. Raising your head keeps fluid from pooling. And if your circles arrive with hay fever season, they may be "allergic shiners," caused by congestion slowing blood flow under the eyes. Treat the allergy, and stop rubbing.

Built for the Eye Area

"M" Eye Brightening was formulated for exactly this: to diminish the look of fatigue, dark circles and puffiness while keeping the thinnest skin on your face hydrated all day.
Beautifeye. Visibly lifts the upper lid and softens the look of puffiness.
Fimexel. A biopolymer that visibly lifts and brightens.
Lipomoist. A plant peptide for long lasting hydration.
Supported by 3LAB's Bio-Engineered Renewal Complex and Apple Stem Cell Technology. Pat from the lower lid to the brow bone each morning, then finish with sunscreen. If pigment is your main cause, add PERFECT C Eye Treatment at night for a stable form of vitamin C.
Give it eight to twelve weeks. Skin renews slowly, and this skin deserves patience. If the darkness is sudden, on one side only, or a deep hollow, that is a conversation for a dermatologist.
Dark Circles: Common Questions
Can you get rid of dark circles permanently?
Not usually, since genetics, age and thin skin stay with you. With sunscreen, sleep and a consistent eye routine, you can make them far less visible and keep them that way.
Do eye creams work for dark circles?
They help when the ingredients match the cause: vitamin C for pigment, caffeine and cold for puffiness, peptides and hydration for thin looking skin. No cream fills a deep hollow.
Can allergies cause dark circles?
Yes. Nasal congestion slows blood flow in the veins under the eyes, creating what doctors call allergic shiners. Treating the allergy and not rubbing your eyes both help.
