
Your lungs get a mask. Your skin doesn't.
On July 17, fine particulate levels in the Baltimore-Washington area neared 200 micrograms per cubic meter. Code Purple. More than 120 million people across the Midwest and Northeast were under air quality alerts, from Boston to Minneapolis.
The fires were in Ontario. The smoke was in your kitchen.
Every piece of advice issued that week was about breathing. Stay indoors. Close the windows. Wear an N95 if you have to go out.
Nobody said anything about the largest organ you left uncovered.
Why July Was Different
Canadian smoke reaching the United States is not new. What made mid-July unusual was where the smoke sat.
A heat dome over Ontario in early July primed the landscape. When the fires erupted, a high-pressure system positioned the jet stream to carry the plume straight into the northeastern states. Then a cold front arrived, and the downward motion of air behind it held the smoke near the ground instead of letting it drift high overhead.
That is the difference between a red sunset and a Code Purple. In some years the smoke passes above you. In July, it was at face level.

The Map Has Changed
It is tempting to file this under Canada, or under California, and move on. The numbers do not allow it.
In March, the Morrill Fire became the largest wildfire in Nebraska's recorded history. In April, two fires in southern Georgia destroyed more than 120 homes, the most the state has ever lost to wildfire. In February, two thirds of Florida sat under extreme drought.
As of August 2, 2026, wildfires have burned 4,904,011 acres in the United States. All of 2025 burned 5.1 million. Peak season runs through September.
The longer trend is the part worth holding onto. Average annual acreage burned has roughly doubled since the 1990s, from about 3.3 million acres a year to roughly 7 million since 2000. In many Western states, fire season now runs two to three months longer than it did in the 1970s.
This is not a bad year. This is the shape of the years now.

What Is Actually Landing On You
Wildfire smoke is not haze. It is a chemical mixture: fine particulate under 2.5 micrometers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, and combustion gases.
It is also not city smog. Urban pollution is a slow drip. Wildfire smoke arrives as an acute, high-intensity spike, which is why three hazy days do what months of ordinary air does not.
During the Camp Fire, San Francisco sat 175 miles from the flames and still saw roughly a ninefold jump in PM2.5. Distance is not protection. If you can smell it, it is on you.

Why It Gets In
Researchers at UC San Francisco and Berkeley describe these compounds as acting like keys. They do not sit on the surface. They slip past the skin's outer barrier and into cells, where they disrupt gene transcription, trigger oxidative stress, and cause inflammation.
Then the loop starts. Each exposure degrades the barrier. A degraded barrier lets more in.
Berkeley's team studied more than 8,000 dermatology visits around the Camp Fire. The effect was measurable in people with no prior skin condition at all. That is the finding worth sitting with. Not that sensitive skin reacted. That ordinary skin did.

The Barrier Is the Variable
You cannot filter the air outdoors. You cannot choose the wind. What you can influence is the condition of the barrier those particles are trying to cross.
